DevOps Engineer

The DevOps Engineer role will be responsible for administering a large and complex web server farm. This position handles the installing, maintaining and monitoring the site's hardware and software. Automation and scripting is key to the management of our servers. The administrator is expected to implement new automation tools and define standard operating procedures - apply his base of technical, operational, process or project skills to identify opportunities for process improvement, lead portions of projects or processes, and bring new knowledge into the organization.

Technical Experience: 
- BS in computer science or equivalent combination of technical education and work experience
- Experience scripting Amazon Web Services is preferred
- Knowledge of HTML, HTTP and other related internet technologies 
- Understands firewall access rules - iptables, AWS security groups and networking requests
- Understands declarative configuration management (cf, chef puppet)
- Understands key network protocols (DNS, HTTP, SMTP) and related server configuration
- Familiar with common unix config files (passwd hosts )
- Understands basics of IP networking, IP routing
- 1 year with UNIX: Linux preferred. 
- 2 years administering web servers.
- 1 year automating tasks with scripting languages: UNIX shell, Perl and Python preferred

Responsibilities:
- Debugs unusual server problems - Uses tcp dump to debug
- Writes scripts for intermediate automation (data manipulation)
- Writes scripts for basic automation (replacing straight manual steps)
- Writes new server templates, writes test cases 
- Creates estimates for tasks with assistance from senior team-members
- Delivers code that is generally accepted by senior team-members
- Interprets and delivers upon technical specifications with guidance from senior engineers
- Analyzes reported problems and documents the results and findings
- Performs routine changes (Account management, OS install, sysvinit mgrmt)
- Adept with Linux command line
- Adept with ssh (key management, port forwarding, debugging)
- Creates effective documentation
- Able to stay current and adapt to new/latest technologies
- Recognizes the risk of changes and tailors actions accordingly
