Role description:

You will join our Environment Team in Arcadis, where we are conducting, advising, designing, and coordinating the implementation of solutions to prevent, control and remedy the adverse effects of human activity on the environment. We are offering support in environmental analysis with the final purpose to monitor and study levels of pollutants in the water and soil. Your main tasks will be to support our clients with understanding the (eco)toxicological hazards and environmental fate of their chemicals, look for alternatives for animal testing, help identifying safer alternatives for hazardous compounds, follow-up on studies with testing facilities, support with the set-up of experimental design and/or interpretation of results, develop exposure modelling and calculate risks for workers, the environment, or consumers.

Role accountabilities:

  • Data gap analysis and development of endpoint coverage strategies
  • QSAR modelling, development of read-across justifications
  • Study monitoring & proactive communication with third parties on ongoing tests
  • Hazard assessment (incl. PNEC/ DNEL derivation, PBT / toxin assessment, determination of classification and labelling)
  • Evaluation of alternative substances to select the most sustainable compound
  • Support use mapping, exposure, and risk assessment
  • You stay on top of trends and developments in risk assessment (such as endocrine disruptors, nanomaterials, New Approach Methodologies, mixture toxicity, etc.) and are happy to grow as an expert in one of these topics
  • Act as subject matter expert in projects you are involved

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in life sciences (BioMedical Sciences, Biology, Toxicology, Chemistry, Bio-engineering)  
  • A degree in toxicology or ecotoxicology or proven working experience in a regulatory context is an asset
  • Strong understanding of scientific disciplines to be able to assess if a wide range of chemicals are toxic or harmful to humans and other living organisms or the environment
  • Knowledge on Regulatory Toxicology with the implementation of REACH and CLP regulations 
  • You have practical knowledge of the European Regulatory framework for chemicals, biocides, or pharmaceuticals. You know or are willing to learn how the OECD/EU tests are performed and can interpret and use them in a regulatory context
  • You can handle complexity, look at issues from different angles, eager to find solutions that are acceptable for industry and authorities, have an analytical and detail-oriented mindset
  • You have excellent written and oral communication skills in English and at least one other EU language. These skills allow you to share complex technical issues in a straightforward and concise way. You can bring your message across to a variety of scientific and non-scientific audiences
  • You are happy to collaborate and communicate with other experts within the company, at the client, sector associations or competent authorities
  • Knowledge in analyzing scientific environmental data, performing quality-control checks, preparing, reviewing, and updating reports
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills
